Continuing the Work at Manzanar Baseball — An Update from Dan Kwong
2025 was a roller coaster ride for the Manzanar Baseball Project, with big ups and downs. We've successfully handled many obstacles along the way, but we could not overcome the government shutdown. Since Manzanar is operated by the National Park Service, Federal closure not only interrupted our work restoring the announcer booth, it forced postponement of the Grand Opening itself. But fear not, MBP fans! We continue to adapt, improvise, and make lemonade out of lemons. So even though our big doubleheader could not take place, Dan got together a dozen or so JA ballplayers from southern and northern California for a symbolic baseball workout and informal scrimmage on the appointed date. Thus we had the satisfaction of BASEBALL ACTION on Manzanar's diamond in spite of governmental non-cooperation! Shortly after the shutdown ended, Dan and All-Star volunteer Sho Yamada leapt into finishing Announcer Booth construction. It looks absolutely beautiful, and we are very proud of this splendid addition to the baseball field restoration. Next up: the centerfield scoreboard, once springtime rolls around.
In more somber news, our beloved Construction Supervisor Chris Siddens is now dealing with a serious health challenge, and our best wishes are with him for a positive outcome.
For all of you who have contributed to this project, thank you always! And please know your donations will continue to go towards the Grand Opening coming next October!
