Between Father and Daughter
by Victoria Bernal

M’hija,
As you stand on your father's Mexican shoulders,
Look up, not down.
You’ll only see our dark shadows, in this place of
angels
That did not want our dark skins and dark accents.
Fighting for scraps of respect,
Full of crying, cheating, beating, bleeding shadows.
Forget this past.

Daddy,
The farther off the ground you raise me
The more I’m lulled me into complacency
Numb to struggles of next generations,
Blind to injustice, in new iterations.

Don’t lift me up without keeping me grounded.
I need your roots and your shadows.
Without knowing the pains that bore your strengths
my branches would sway any way the wind blows.
Necesito saber soy hija de La Raza
