lady moon broke into pieces
by Ariel Robello

lady moon don’t dance behind bars of Guantanamo Bay
where phantom men watch her sail cross sky
their hunger for freedom growing with ebb and flow of tide

if walls could pray
theirs be a jumbled chant of tears and rage
pages carved in cement
eroding with each crashing wave

lady moon can’t read
dogma we’ve spent generations on
she’s been blinded by fireworks of war
mortar blowing canyons in her face deep as mass graves

scarred she swallows our pain every 28 days
then bursts into a billion stones
a hail of our own hate
beating us down to our knees

from heavens we must seem
a helpless mass of briars and thistle and stem
from heavens we must wreak
of iodine and lies and sweat

contradictions of combined histories
wanting so to believe
that this time will indeed be different
