To All Relations: Ceremony of Remembrance |

On March 4, 2006, as part of the To All Relations Project, Traci Kiriyama and I began a whirlwind 6 day residency with Hmong Students at the University of Wisconsin, Marathan County. It was an immersion experience into their community. With the students as our guide, we shopped at their stores, ate at their restaurants and even went to a funeral. But most important, we listened to their stories. Eight brave souls stepped forward without really knowing what they were getting into. We led them through a process… breathing, stretching, moving, singing and digging deep for their stories. Their courageous spirits began to improvise, write and quickly develop their performing skills, creating a new theater piece: Ceremony of Remembrance: Nco Ntsoov. It was an amazing, bonding experience for all of us… connecting us with their families, traditions and journeys from Laos to Wisconsin. The Hmong are famous for their hand-embroidered story cloths. The images and stories revealed on the stage were perhaps a new kind of “story cloth”.
Special thanks to the Amazing 8 for their loving spirits, Traci for her creative leadership, Kris Berge for his technical genius, and Jean Greenwood for getting us there.
