"I Dream a Garden" a tribute to Gerald Hairston was held on August 3, 2002 at the Genesis Lutheran Community Garden and brought together members of the community to enjoy an afternoon of song, dance, stories, and food. A Harvest Dance set to an original song sung by the Genesis Choir (directed by Mrs. Harriet Bell) was performed (both conceptualized by Great Leap's Nobuko Miyamoto) in memory of late community gardener Gerald Hairston.

“I Dream a Garden” was magical. Fabulous folk dancing, story telling, singing, poetry, fun, food, folks. The artistry and creativity that Gerald has inspired are incredible. I haven't seen anything like it in Detroit heretobefore. In years to come the “I Dream a Garden” Harvest song and dance created by Nobuko may end up
being performed formally and informally as frequently as MLK’s I Have a Dream speech.

Come into the circle,
circle of life,
Come into the dream of a paradise,
What was once a ruin can be reborn,
Just like the sun appearing after a storm.

With your hands,
with your heart,
With this land,
we can make a new start.

Every step is a blessing,
Every song is a prayer,
Every seed is a healing,
That the world will share.
