On August 2, 2002, members from Detroit Summer, Matrix Theatre Comany, and Our Lady of Guadalupe collaborated to bring the Obon Dance choreographed by Great Leap's Nobuko Miyamoto to life. The dance is a tribute to Gerald Hairston, a community leader and avid gardener who passed away this year. The Tribute was also performed August 3 at the Genesis Community Garden. (See Photo Gallery 7 for pictures from August 3). This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Community members of all ages and backgrounds came together to learn and practice the Obon Dance created to celebrate Detroit's urban garden movement.
(Right) Teen members of the Matrix Theatre Company also created a hip hop version of the dance set to a rap version of the music.
(Left) Detroit performance artists Zola and Sumarah take a break to chat and enjoy the beautiful day.
