Nobuko Miyamoto is the Founder and Artistic Director of Great Leap. Nobuko is one of the early voices from the Asian American cultural movement. She, Chris Iijima and Charlie Chin created the first album of Asian American music in 1973, "A Grain of Sand." Nobuko founded Great Leap in 1978 to produce works on a larger scale, among them the musical theater productions "Chop Suey," "Joanne is My Middle Name," and the critically acclaimed "Talk Story" and "Talk Story II." Nobuko began her career in film and Broadway musicals, "West Side Story," "The King and I," and "Flower Drum Song." Nobuko has also worked on the other side of the camera when her song "Yuiyo" and choreography were in the film, "Karate Kid II." Nobuko continues touring nationally in her one-woman show, "A Grain of Sand," teaching theater and storytelling classes and workshops, and leads residencies at colleges and theaters throughout the country. Her recordings "To All Relations," "A Grain of Sand," and "Best of Both Worlds" are available through Bindu Records.
Luke Patterson is Great Leap’s Administrative Coordinator. Luke graduated from UCLA, majoring in Mass Communications, where he co-produced the UCLA Jazz-Reggae Festival from 2000-02. Luke is also a graffiti artist and MC for the Los Angeles-based hip-hop group "Aesthetics Crew." His visual art has been featured in several magazines and galleries, and his group is preparing to take the world by storm some time in the near future...hopefully when their next record is released! Luke is also an organizer with the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality as well as several other community and political organizations. He is an artist of and for the people, and is determined to play a role in freeing the world from oppression.
