New WORLD Theater
Gathering Stories ... Nobuko on the Road

In June 1999, I taught my “Telling Our Stories” workshop in a week-long residency for New WORLD Theater at U Mass in Amherst, an intense and wonderful experience! Their Intersections Institute is a yearly retreat where artists come to share their techniques with other artists and students.

I shared 20 students with Rhodessa Jones, co-founder of CULTURAL ODYSSEY and the MEDEA PROJECT in San Francisco. We had students from 16 to 63 – theater students, professors, storytellers, dancers and even an Albino Goddess!

Oceans of love to Theresa, Oga, Humphrey, Aparna, Javiera, Don, Jim, Solandra and Carla (the Albino Goddess) thanks to Rhodessa, beautiful Black Goddess and teacher, andgratitude to Roberta, Dennis, Lisa HG and the New WORLD staff for making it happen … again and again.

i gave them the space to breathe, move
laugh, dance, play, speak, sing, listen
to tune into themselves and to each other
they gave me their trust
then… their stories
i was amazed by their openness
generosity, non-ego and their risk-taking
they trusted not only me
but the fragile and powerful process
of opening their souls
and letting the creative happen
so in 6 days they created their works in process
their stories were about borders and boundaries
on the inside and the outside
and in that process
transformation happened
hearts cracked open
walls walked and sometimes danced through
boundaries of culture, class, age, color
disappeared
and we became family
