PERFORMANCES
PERFORMANCES have been a mainstay of Great Leap’s work since its inception, playing to hundreds of colleges nationally, and schools through the Los Angeles Music Center On Tour program. Our present touring works include:

“A SLICE OF RICE, FRIJOLES AND GREENS” is a humorous, poignant and inspiring performance of original theater, poetry and music celebrating the richness of America’s diversity. As enlightening as it is entertaining, A SLICE OF RICE, FRIJOLES AND GREENS speaks to timely social issues including racism, living with physical disabilities, post-9/11 xenophobia, sexual identity, and classism. SLICE features Great Leap’s critically acclaimed solo performers who take audiences across societal borders, giving voice to unheard stories and revealing the commonalities and connections between us all. This show has successfully toured hundreds of colleges nationally and internationally, and is seen yearly by UCLA’s medical students on their first day of orientation.

“CYCLES OF CHANGE” is a fun and physical theater piece that rolls out personal stories about the joys and challenges of urban bicycling. Created and performed in the past two CicLAvia events, this 20-minute performance on wheels is suitable for outdoor festivals and school settings.

“WHAT CAN A SONG DO “ is NOBUKO MIYAMOTO’s multi-media lecture/performance in which she uses the songs of her life as an artist and activist as a window to the past and a way to envision the future. She tells the stories behind the songs of A GRAIN OF SAND, which helped propel the 70’s birth of the Asian American movement. She speaks of her continuing path as a songwriter and theater artist to empower individuals and communities to find a voice for their stories. From her days as folk singer/troubadour to her environmental music videos, she continues to use the power of song as catalyst to activate, build community and realize our interconnectedness with each other and the Earth.

Coming in 2013…

“ECO-VISIONS” is a lively, interactive, multimedia theater piece starring Nobuko Miyamoto and Dan Kwong, co-creators of Great Leap's "Eco-Vids". With humorous characters and stories interwoven with Eco-Vids B.Y.O. CHOPSTIX, MOTTAINAI and CYCLES OF CHANGE, Miyamoto and Kwong make the daunting issues of climate change relevant, digestible and even fun, engaging audiences to see how changing their habits can make a big difference for our planet.

IT’S GREAT 2B AMERICAN follows Dan Kwong’s search for an enlightened American identity, inspired by his journeys to Asia. From stories of his all-American childhood to dark historical sagas, Kwong confronts the split personality of the American psyche -- “champion of democracy” on one hand, “imperialist bully” on the other -- and reveals the ironies of having a U.S. passport and an Asian face. Packed with personal stories, dynamic physicality, rich video imagery and Kwong’s signature comical props and costumes, IG2BA speaks to America’s checkered past, troubled present, and a hopeful future.
