Mr. Hyphen 2007 |

On June 9, 2007, Great Leap’s Administrative Coordinator/Office Hooligan Luke Patterson traveled up to the Bay Area to compete for the title of “Mr. Hyphen”… and won! In front of a crazed crowd at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Hyphen Magazine hosted it’s 2nd annual Mr. Hyphen competition, “celebrating the men of the Asian American community who devote their tremendous time and effort to worthy Asian community organizations.” Vying for the prestigious title, bragging rights, and $500 for the non-profit org of his choice, were six strong competitors.
Luke represented not one, but two organizations: Great Leap of course, and the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (through which Luke coordinates a high school mediation program). The night was hosted by the ferociously funny comedienne Ali Wong, who’s “mature” sense of humor completely embarrassed Luke in front of his Poh-poh, who luckily didn't hear most of her jokes… whew!
After wading through Talent, Fashion, and Q&A Rounds (but no swimsuit round that Luke had prepared so hard for…), Luke was crowned “Mr. Hyphen 2007!” Luke vowed to use the crown to build for greater cross-cultural understanding, education, and acceptance… But not before celebrating the night away alongside his fierce competitors & the Hyphen staff!
Thanks to Hyphen Magazine for making it all possible! And a big shout out to the other fellas for making it such an incredible night for “underappreciated” Asian men everywhere!
