A Slice of Rice, Frijoles, and Greens

Quotes... Cool things people had to say

"What is fascinating about ‘A Slice of Rice, Frijoles, and Greens’ is that each segment addresses the different issues of each culture in the USA. The stories are genuine and firsthand, as opposed to hearsay. The artists are expressive and articulate the issues well and with humor. This is a great multicultural awareness program!"

Mai Nguyen
Director, Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center
Wright State University

"We had over 350 people in the audience this time, but the majority of students... would benefit from the show, which is why people are wanting it to become a part of orientation."

Melanie Castillo-Cullather
Director of the Asian Culture Center
Indiana University

"I thought it was the best multicultural performance... no, the best performance piece that I have seen in the last five years. I was teaching a Cultural Diversity class in the spring and all my students who were able to attend were blown away as well."

Deb Giunta
Co-Director of the Center for Cultural Fluency
Mount St. Mary’s College

"The performance was very professional, funny, and stimulating for the children as well as for the parents. I found the presentation to be creative and original in theme and in production. Visiting the museum is a special event and I’m sure your performance made a lasting impression."

Karen Weeks Satzman
Education Coordinator
Los Angeles County Museum of Art

"
Each performer touched me by sharing their lives with us ... I felt special that they felt comfortable opening their lives to the audience."

Letters from Student Organizers

Dear Cara,

Hi. I am a college student at the University of Texas at Austin. I attended the production of "A Slice of Rice, Frijoles and Greens" last week. I thought the production was great. I was so impressed by each performance separately. I found the cohesion of the production great.

The stories either moved me to the point of tears or made me laugh to the point of tears. I was so happy that I attended such a culturally rich and educational show. I only wish that there was a larger attendance to the show, becuase then it could touch so many more people. "A Slice of Rice" is truly for everyone. It offers glimpses of other's heritage and culture that everyone can appreciate and in a way relate it to something in their own life.

I cannot give enough praise to the performers that came to my school. They were all amazing. And I will always remember what they said. Great Leap is a wonderful organization for putting together such a talented group of performers. I loved the show completely.

Jenni,

I've just come back from taking Louise, Sybil, Arlene, and Paulina to the hotel and I had to write and tell you how great their performance was! They drew a crowd of about 300 people tonight, which during midterm week, was really great.

The audience response after the performance, however, was the really outstanding part. In my time on the board, I've never seen such a positive audience response, and I can't even count the number of people that inquired about an encore performance afterward.

The group's chemistry not only with one another, but with the audience, made the evening a hit for everyone. They were incredibly professional and a joy to have. I gave your organization's name to several people after the performance was over and I hope they will be calling you soon.

This is definitely a performance I would want to see again and I hope we can continue to maintain a working relationship in the future. I will give your organization's number to the next speaker's coordinator as well. Thanks again.

I just really want to praise Great Leap for being so enjoyable to work with. The show was a great success for Princeton ... It was a highly entertaining and energetic show and yet it also captured the poignant message of diversity and ethnicity in the U.S. I really liked the uniqueness of each segment and how while they have great fluidity, they also reflect each artist’s own personal experiences.

Much thanks to Paulina, Nobuko, Chic, Anne and Jenni. Please feel free to pass my name along to other colleges who are interested in hearing reviews/evaluations.
