Derek Nakamoto is one of the rare talents from the Islands who has captured the attention of the national music industry. Born and raised in Hawaii, Derek moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and began performing with Epic recording artist Hiroshima. With them, he co-wrote and arranged the worldwide hits “Distant Thoughts” and “A Thousand Cranes.”

His recent works include Musical Scores for the HBO Series "Happily Ever After" Shows, “The Emperors New Clothes” and “The Princess and the Pea.” Derek has also arranged Keiko Matsui's new album entitled, “Dream Walk” which hit #5 on Billboards' Contemporary Jazz Charts. Her previous album “Sapphire” was nominated for Soul Train’s Jazz album of the Year in 1996, also arranged by Derek.

Theatrical works also include Musical Scores for Nobuko Miyamoto’s “A Grain of Sand” and “Talk Story I & II,” Holly Near’s “Fire in the Rain, Singer in the Storm” and the NFCB 1990 Gold Reel Award Winner “The Last Game Show” directed by Norman Jayo.

He has produced Elektra Recording Artist Teddy Pendergrass’ album “Truly Blessed” featuring the Grammy nominated single “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” as well as a #1 R&B single “It Should Have Been You.” He has produced critically acclaimed debut LP’s by Nicky Holland (Tears for Fears) for Epic Records and Fernando Saunders (Lou Reed) for A&M Records. Derek recently released his first solo record entitled “Fuyu” on Tribe Records distributed nationally by the INDI Group.

He is also Co-Founder of Bindu Records which has released five projects; Nigerian Talking Drum Master Francis Awe’s “Oro Injile,” Nobuko Miyamoto’s “To All Relations,” Charlie Chin’s “Jataka Tales,” Kenny Endo’s “Hibiki” and has re-issued “A Grain of Sand: songs from the birth of Asian America” in CD format.

He was the co-producer for "To All Relations" from 1997 to 1999.

Nakamoto is a member of Great Leap's board of directors and President of Bindu Records.
