GREAT LEAP : ARTISTS : DEANAR YOUNG
Deanar Young is a native Michigander who originally moved to California to pursue aspirations of performing in film and television. His dancing career began at eighteen while attending Cuyahoga Community College/Metro. Deanar was awarded a full-working scholarship to study with Alice Rubinstein at the Footpath Dance Company in Ohio. He later began teaching creative movement classes, modern, and jazz dance classes for teens and adults while touring and performing in lecture demonstrations and concerts with Footpath for three and a half years. Arriving on the West Coast in 1985, Deanar soon met up with the Tony award winning Choreographer/Director Donald McKayle via the Inner City Cultural Center. On the stage, Deanar gained critical acclaim in This Body Homeless and performed with the San Francisco Mime Troupe in the production of Spain/36, at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, South Pacific and House of Flowers. He also performed in the First Annual Soul Train Awards, and the 22nd Annual N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards. He has worked with Barbara Mandrell, Alyssa Milano, Deweesal Zappa, Levert, Soul II Soul, and Super Models Iman and Beverly Johnson. Deanar traveled extensively throughout Japan and South East Asia as co-choreographer and dancer on the Stevie Wonder Characters World Tour. In 1993, Deanar received a four year Talent Scholarship Award from the Theatre and Dance Department at Chapman University in Orange, California and has been majoring in Dance Performance and Choreography. Deanar has been performing with Great Leap for many years. |
