GREAT LEAP : ARTISTS : ALLAN MANALO

Allan Manalo began his career in entertainment on the stages of Hawaii where he studied theatre and appeared in numerous stage productions. He moved to San Francisco to pursue his true calling, stand up comedy. After three years of working night clubs and colleges, he managed to land gigs as the opening act for Sinbad, Andy Bumatai, Marc Curry and Margaret Cho. In 1993, Manalo began a national tour performing for the next three years on stage spanning 47 states, 360 colleges and comedy clubs.

Manalo has also written and directed plays at the Asian American Theatre Company in San Francisco as well as at his alma mater, San Francisco State University. Manalo will also be directing one of the plays this year for Teatro ng Tanan's production of Three Lives. He is currently a freelance writer for Filipinas Magazine and continues to perform stand up, playwriting, directing and producing. He has also established a college programming agency, Coco Jam Productions, which provides entertainment geared towards Asian American & Filipino American Student Audiences.

Manalo's performance, entitled "Pointed Lips," has been performed on many campuses and much of his material comes from his ethnically diverse childhood which had him searching for his Filipino identity.
