RE: Arts Education Funding 6110-177-0001
CA Department of Education Arts Work Visual and Performing Arts Education Program

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

California Arts Advocates represents artists, arts organizations, and Californians who support the Arts. Its membership is a broad spectrum of budget sizes, arts disciplines, diverse cultures, audiences and regions. Its membership also includes artists and arts educators who teach California's 6 million school children.

The California Department of Education Arts Works program, funded by Arts Education Funding 6110-177-0001 (Prop 98 funds) makes it possible for schools and teachers to develop curriculum, assessment tools and networks that foster collaborative initiatives and professional growth that ultimately benefit California children. Education Code 51210 and 51220 specify arts as a required course of study for grades one through twelve. Both the California State University and University of California systems require visual and performing arts courses consistent with California State Education Standards. Because of models created through the Arts Works program, schools can adhere to the education code and provide courses that meet the CSU/UC requirement.

Effective arts education is one of the most important long-term issues and opportunities facing the arts world and California. Because of Proposition 13, we have already lost a generation of school children who have never experienced the arts academically or through live performance. I don't know of any 40-year-old soccer players, but I do know many adults who are called upon to speak in front of an audience or give presentations to their colleagues and employers and it is the arts that taught them these skills. The Arts prepare our young people to think creatively and critically and to find solutions.

Please, Governor, support a budget that supports Arts Education! Please sign this year's budget that provides $6 million for the CA Department of Education Arts Work Visual and Performing Arts Education Program. If there are any questions, please feel free to call our legislative advocate, Ms. Kathryn Lynch at (916) 443-0202.

Sincerely,

Lisa Cullen Caretto
