Special Budget Update: 3/17/04
Fight for the Arts in LA!
We are fighting for the survival of arts and culture in Los Angeles. Mayor Jim Hahn is considering eliminating not only the $3.5 million grants program that reaches millions of LA residents and visitors each year, but the entire Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department.
Great Leap reaches up to 50,000 people each year with performances that cross cultural borders, build communities and change peoples lives with the support of the LACAD. Last summer, we fought the elimination of grants funding from the California Arts Council and lost our largest grants funder. We live in a state that spends 3 cents per person per year on the arts compared to a national average over $1 per capita (See my column "State of the Arts" from last August about the 94% cut to the CAC). Now we stand to lose funding from Los Angeles as well. If the LACAD is eliminated, Great Leap's major culminating performance of "To All Relations: Sacred Moon Songs" set for July 31, will most likely be cancelled. This multi-ethnic, arts residency project that links the Muslim, Mexican and Japanese American communities will be cancelled. Using the arts to share a message of tolerance and understanding will be cancelled. War rages on, but art that demands peace will be cancelled.
We need to act now. Please sign the petition:

Subject: Do not eliminate the LA Cultural Affairs Department!
Dear (Council Person or whoever):
I am an (artist/administrator/whatever) and am very concerned about what is happening with the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Los Angeles (CAD). It is a shame as:
Just as Los Angeles was starting to get recognized by the rest of the world....posted in today's www.artsjournal.com daily newsletter:
L.A. Culture: No, It's Not An Oxymoron To hear most people tell it, you would think that Los Angeles is a sun-drenched wasteland of zombified Hollywood dunderheads, sipping mineral water while they sit in traffic on their way to yet another insipid premiere. As far as arts and culture go, most East Coasters would probably smirk at the mention of such things existing in L.A. But while the rest of North America looks down its nose, Los Angeles has quietly become one of the continent's best arts towns, and other cities would do well to follow its example, says Martin Knelman. - Toronto Star 03/07/04

The economic impact to the city will be immeasurable as not only are individual artists and art organizations effected, but also so are the other economic sectors that support the arts industry in this city such as tourism, printing, facility rental, transportation, to name just a few. We are writing to you so that you will reconsider and keep CAD intact; Certainly other options, not as drastic are available. Think out of the box.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)

(Your Organization)
